Identity
thenational.api
A new portal opens on your device, and you are invited to immerse in the stories of how a Malaysian takes root in Singapore while navigating their identity.

Set amidst the city-state’s National Day celebrations across 1966, 1999, and 2020, our protagonists in each time period trudges against the currents of the social order to carve out a space in which they belong. Even in a city that is commonly regarded as a Southeast Asian ideal, queer migrants continue to wrestle between their sense of home, their ambitions, and the familial and societal expectations.

Our love may be intertwined with politics, but through that, we see courage, sacrifice, and hope.

The format in which you’ll experience this trilogy allows you to be in the shoes of the diverse identities in all of our interconnected histories. Inspired by the malleability of the .API (application programming interface), we hope to continue crafting and sharing narratives that would shape the future of the region’s shared experiences.

T.B.C.
Completed at Studio Vanessa Ban
T.B.C. started organically with a simple request to curate a private dinner party for one of the client’s corporate users.

Many events later, the client still found herself struggling to decide on one brand name that would speak to the vision behind the original idea but the one thing that seemed to remain consistent was that no one event was alike, consequently propelling the “C” in T.B.C. to come to mean multiple things —

To Be Created, To Be Curated, To Be a Chef, To Be a Collective, and with this, the overarching idea of T.B.C. came to be.

Notes for the Future by Green Zeng:
A Review 2010-2020
Completed as part of Catch-22
Catch-22 had the honour of working with local filmmaker and artist Green Zeng in his ten year commemorative series, Notes for the Future. Zeng’s art practice explores issues of historiography and identity, and examines how history is scripted, perceived and disseminated.

His earlier work focused on areas such as alternative histories, student activism, and the social-political understanding of landscape. In comparison, his current work questions the connection between the archives, the State and the individual, and the role that an artist plays in Foucault’s notion of ‘parrhesia’ (truth-telling).
